Ways the Equiano Institute is advancing AI in Africa

Learn about the groundbreaking work we’re doing at the Equiano Institute and with partners across Africa to drive ethical and empowering AI innovation.

The Equiano Institute launched in 2023 as an Africa-based hub focused on responsible and empowering AI development on the continent. Headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, we collaborate with researchers, governments, startups and communities across Africa to shape AI systems that represent our cultures, values and priorities.

Here are six key ways we are contributing to the AI ecosystem:

  • Preserving African languages
  • Our research project applies natural language processing to document and digitize African languages at risk of extinction. We are developing techniques to process low-resource languages and generate rich annotated datasets as a lasting legacy.

  • Analyzing policy impacts of AI
  • Equiano researchers are examining the societal implications of rapid AI progress to inform governance in Africa. We published a benchmarking study of AI readiness in 18 countries and provide tailored policy recommendations.

  • Modeling AI's economic impacts
  • Joint research with the African Development Bank explores how AI could impact jobs, skills and growth trajectories across industries in the coming decade. We simulate scenarios to guide skills development and labor policies.

  • Enabling explainable AI
  • Explainability is key for trustworthy AI. Our tools help demystify model behaviors for stakeholders through interactive visualizations and examples. We also audit algorithms for fairness and safety.

  • Building an African research community
  • The Equiano Institute supports aspiring African researchers through our visiting scholar program, research grants, internships and open access education. We are cultivating an inclusive pan-African network.

Stay tuned for updates as we continue advancing responsible AI progress in Africa through research, policy and empowering communities!
