About

Joanna Wiaterek is an AI researcher specializing in benefit-sharing, responsible AI governance, and ethnographic AI development. She explores how AI’s societal and economic benefits can be distributed equitably, particularly in regions where access to cutting-edge technology is limited.

Her work spans responsible AI diffusion, the intersection of AI and culture, and the development of policies that align AI advancements with local needs. As Co-Founder of Equiano Institute, Joanna focuses on bridging AI research with policy, ensuring that AI is not only technologically sophisticated but also socially inclusive and globally beneficial.

Research Theme

Joanna’s research integrates social anthropology with AI governance, bringing a people-first perspective to the design, deployment, and regulation of AI. She is particularly interested in how cultural contexts shape AI adoption and governance, and how ethnographic insights can inform more inclusive and ethical AI systems.

By combining anthropological methods with AI policy research, she explores new ways to distribute AI’s benefits fairly, ensuring that technological progress does not deepen global inequalities but instead amplifies local agency and innovation.

Joanna holds a Master’s degree from the University of Cambridge.
