Equiano AI Institute LLM Vision

Executive Summary

Pioneering a Foundational LLM for Africa

The Equiano AI Institute is at the forefront of developing a foundational Large Language Model (LLM) deeply rooted in African cultures and languages. Our LLM is designed to be dynamic and contextually aware, focusing on inclusivity and responsible AI governance. By leveraging the legacy and connections of the Equiano Institute, we aim to address the unique challenges and opportunities of the Global South, particularly in Africa.

Our Vision

We strive to build a more inclusive digital future by developing an LLM that understands and respects diverse cultural contexts, languages, and societal needs. Our mission is to create an LLM that truly represents the rich diversity of the African continent, addressing its unique linguistic and cultural landscape. Emerging from the Equiano Institute, our AI initiative addresses the growing need for responsible AI governance in underrepresented regions.

Problem

Large language models often underperform for speakers of low-resource languages, relying heavily on data from high-resource languages. This impacts 1.2 billion native speakers of low-resource languages, creating accessibility barriers. For instance, Nigeria has over 500 languages, and in Ghana, Twi is spoken by about 18 million people.

Key Achievements and Partnerships

  • Engaging with NIST & US, UK, and Singapore AISI
  • Contributing to the UN's Global Digital Compact
  • Supporting the UNDP & The Italian Presidency through the G7 initiative
  • Partnered with OpenAI on AI evaluations for African languages

Our Approach

Research & Development: Studying AI's impact on African societies and developing frameworks that respect local contexts.

Language Inclusivity: Incorporating a wide range of African languages, including those underrepresented in AI.

Cultural Integration: Ensuring our LLM respects diverse African cultural norms and idioms.

Local Partnerships: Collaborating with African institutions, linguists, and cultural experts.

Join us in shaping AI's future, contribute to developing an AI that understands and responds to Africa's diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.
